The Surrey Eagles will play their second and final game at the BCHL Showcase this afternoon against the West Kelowna Warriors. The Eagles are coming off a 3-2 overtime victory over the Powell River Kings in their opener while the Warriors won big, 6-0 over the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.
Surrey and West Kelowna only met once last season, on March 9th, when the Warriors defeated the Eagles 4-2 at the South Surrey Arena. The two teams have only faced each other 10 times since 2006. The Warriors have won seven of those games.
Demico Hannoun had the overtime winner for the Birds in their opener. Assistant captains Craig Wyszomirski and Brett Mulcahy also chipped in with goals while Glenn Ferguson picked up the win between the pipes. The Eagles went 2-for-5 on the power play, and only allowed one shorthanded goal on five opportunities.
For West Kelowna, Max French had a big performance in the first game of the season, scoring a hat-trick in the victory over Salmon Arm. Brett McKinnon also had three points, a goal and two assists, while Tyler Briggs made 23 saves for the shutout in his first game in the BCHL.
Edward Dyson will get the start between the pipes for Surrey this afternoon. The 20-year-old played for Dawson Creek of the NAHL last season, posting six wins in 39 games with a 4.27 goals-against-average.
