Drew Best scored the overtime winner at 1:04 of the second extra period to lift the Surrey Eagles to a 3-2 come from behind victory over the Chilliwack Chiefs at the South Surrey Arena. The goal was Best's first in the BCHL and gave the Eagles their second win of the young season.
The Chiefs opened the scoring at 4:19 of the first period when Josh Hansen pounced on a rebound in the slot, hammering the puck past Surrey goaltender Glenn Ferguson who was making his second start of the season. Before the opening frame was out, the Chiefs went ahead 2-0 when Matt Revel beat Ferguson with a wrist shot from the left circle.
In the second stanza, the Surrey power play came to life. With both Cooper Rush and Tanner Cochrane of the Chiefs in the penalty box, Michael Stenerson beat Chilliwack goalie Mitch Gillam on the door step as he knocked home a rebound of a Demico Hannoun point shot to pull Surrey within one. The Birds would add another power play goal in the third period to tie the game when Stefan Burzan's wrist shot from the top of the left circle was redirected past Gillam by Colton Mackie to even the score at 2-2.
The teams remained deadlocked through 60 minutes, and after five minutes of 4-on-4 overtime hockey solved nothing, the game went to 3-on-3. Best's opportunity came when he broke up a pass at his own blue line, springing himself and Demico Hannoun in on a two-on-one. Best decided to shoot, and beat Gillam on the stick side to lift the Eagles to the victory.
Ferguson picked up his second win in as many games in goal for Surrey, making 27 saves. In his two games played, Ferguson has a 1.89 goals-against-average.
