The Eagles were heavily out shot in the opening frame but managed to take the lead in the late going of the period. With 50 seconds to go in the first, Drew Best opened the scoring with a one-timer in the deep slot after Michael Stenerson fed him a nice pass from behind the net. The goal was Best's third marker in as many games.
Surrey doubled its lead at 6:53 of the second period when Stenerson received a pass from Hannoun in the high slot and beat Victoria net minder Michael Stiliadis cleanly. But before the stanza expired, Victoria pulled within one when Gerry Fitzgerald tapped home a rebound off a Blake Thompson point shot.
Less than a minute into the third, the Grizzlies tied the game on the power play when Myles Fitzgerald beat Dyson, netting his third of the year to even the score at 2-2. However, Hannoun would knock home the winning goal just a few minutes later as he drove hard to the slot with the puck and shovelled it past Stiliadis after being knocked to the ice, giving the Birds the victory.
Victoria was 1-for-4 on the power play while the Eagles were unable to convert with the man advantage, finishing 0-for-4.
The Eagles also welcomed two new additions to the lineup as both Mason Blacklock and Tommy Stipancik played their first games in green, white and blue.
Surrey's next game is Sunday afternoon as the Birds will host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in their lone visit to the South Surrey Arena this season. The puck drops at 4pm.
