Demico Hannoun scored the overtime winner on the power play 23 seconds into the first extra period to lift the Surrey Eagles to a 3-2 victory over the Powell River Kings at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack.
With Kings defenseman Luke Ripley in the sin bin for holding, Hannoun’s one-timer from the left hash-mark found its way past Powell River goalie Jonah Imoo to give Surrey a measure of revenge against the team that was responsible for their last two playoff exits.
Both teams had to deal with poor ice conditions as the puck was bouncing throughout the game. Surrey went 2-for-5 with the man advantage in the victory while the Kings were 1-for-5. Glenn Ferguson picked up the win in goal for the Birds, stopping 18 shots.
The Eagles fell behind early in the hockey game when J.P. Villenueve opened the scoring for Powell River at the 7:16 mark of the first period, beating Ferguson with a wrist shot from the right circle. But Craig Wyszomirski tied the game for the Birds before the end of the opening frame when he hammered a one-timer into the top corner from the right half-boards.
Surrey would take the lead in the second period after Stefan Burzan’s shot from the slot took a bounce off Brett Mulcahy’s foot and ended up behind Imoo. The Eagles maintained that lead until the late stages of the third period when the Kings tied the game on the power play. With Burzan in the box for tripping, Jarryd Leung danced down the right boards and made a pretty move into the slot, firing a wrist shot past Ferguson. The goal would force the extra period and ultimately earn the Kings a single point in the standings with the overtime loss.
