Eagles Defeat Chiefs 3-1

Nic Pierog scored twice to lead the Surrey Eagles to a 3-1 victory over the Chilliwack Chiefs in the Birds final pre-season game at home.

The Eagles fell behind in the first period when Ben Masella opened the scoring for Chilliwack with a slap shot from the point that beat Surrey net minder Edward Dyson. But the Eagles answered back in the late stages of the opening frame when Demico Hannoun scored a power play marker, going top shelf from the slot on Chiefs goaltender Mitch Gillam.

Surrey took the lead in the second period while down a man when newcomer Chris Tracy intercepted a Chilliwack breakout pass and fired a shot on goal. Pierog followed up and shovelled the rebound past Gillam for the shorthanded marker. Dyson had to come up big for Surrey late in the middle frame when Chilliwack defenseman Alex Perron-Fontaine jumped out of the penalty box and received a stretch pass, sending him in all alone on Dyson. But the 20-year-old was up to the challenge, stopped Perron-Fontaine with the right pad to keep Surrey ahead after 40 minutes.

For the second game in a row, the Birds would clinch the victory with an empty netter as Pierog tucked the puck into an open cage with just five seconds remaining in the game to give the Eagles their third win of the pre-season.

With the victory, Surrey improves to 3-1-1 in exhibition play and will play their final game of the pre-season on Saturday evening in Chilliwack. The face-off goes at 7pm at the Prospera Centre.

Pre-Game Report: Eagles vs. Chiefs

The Surrey Eagles will play the fifth game of their six game exhibition campaign tonight when they host the Chilliwack Chiefs at the South Surrey Arena.

The Eagles are 2-1-1 so far in the pre-season while the Chiefs are 1-1-1 having beaten Merritt while losing and tying two games against Coquitlam.

Eagles Players To Watch:

Chris Tracy: The 20-year-old was released by Langley but has been given a second chance in Surrey. Tracy scored 15 goals for the Rivermen last season -- more than any returning Eagles player had last year.

Devon Toews: The second year defenseman, who has committed to Quinnipiac, has been turning heads throughout camp and in the exhibition season. Toews is looking to improve on a 29 point season on the blue line last year and could be one of the top defensemen in the BCHL this season.

Edward Dyson: The veteran goaltender enters his final season of junior hockey with only one BCHL game under his belt. The Port Alberni native spent the last two seasons playing for Dawson Creek of the NAHL but is expected to play a significant role between the pipes for the Eagles this season.

Puck drop: 7pm at the South Surrey Arena.

Eagles Down Express 4-2

Trevor Cameron and Colton Mackie each had a goal and an assist as the Surrey Eagles improved to 2-1-1 in the 2012 pre-season with a 4-2 victory over the Coquitlam Express tonight at the South Surrey Arena.

The goals came fast and furious in the first period with the Express opening the scoring 6:32 into the game when Zack Pryzbek knocked home a rebound in the slot. The Eagles answered back just over four minutes later when Trevor Cameron walked out of the left corner and fed Beau Orser at the right post, and Orser tucked it past Coquitlam goaltender Cole Huggins to even the score. Surrey took the lead at the 13:40 mark after a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play between Drew Best and Devon Toews resulted in Brandon Morley walking into the slot uncontested and beating Huggins between the legs. But before the period was out, young Coquitlam forward Mathew Barzal tied it up at 2-2 with a slick wrist shot that beat Eagles goaltender Glenn Ferguson through the five hole.

Trevor Cameron scored the lone goal in the middle frame at 9:44 after his long shot from the top of the circle took a weird bounce off the end boards and ricocheted back to him in the crease with a wide open cage in front of him. Colton Mackie would seal the deal in the late stages of the third period, after the Express had pulled Huggins in favour of a sixth skater, when he fired a slap shot from the opposite side of centre right into the top corner of the net.

Scoring Summary:

1st Period:
Coquitlam Express at 6:32 - #11 Zack Pryzbek from #16 Mathew Barzal.
Surrey Eagles at 10:35 - #21 Beau Orser from #96 Trevor Cameron and #14 Colton Mackie.

Eagles Next Game: Friday, August 31st vs. the Chilliwack Chiefs at the South Surrey Arena. Puck drop at 7pm.

Pre-Game Report: Eagles vs. Express

Tonight, the Surrey Eagles host the Coquitlam Express in their fourth game of the 2012 pre-season. The Birds are 1-1-1 through their first three games in exhibition play.

Surrey's last game was a 4-4 tie with Coquitlam on Sunday afternoon at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex. Since then, the Express have played two games, losing 7-4 to Langley on Monday before defeating Chilliwack 5-4 on Tuesday.

The Eagles and Express split their season series last year, both finishing with records of 3-2-1-1.

Eagles Players To Watch:

Luke Dietsch: The 18-year-old from Minnesota was playing for the Langley Rivermen last week and actually suited up against the Eagles in the first pre-season game of the year. While the Rivermen decided to part ways with the young forward, Matt Erhart and his staff saw something they liked and added Dietsch to their training camp roster.

Demico Hannoun: Hannoun returns for his second season with Eagles. The 16-year-old put up 26 points in 49 games last year and is poised to have a break-out season as he's already been a major offensive contributor in the first three exhibition games.

Brett Seldon: The Ontario native was acquired from North York of the OJHL the week before training camp. At 6'2 and 195 pounds, he's part of an Eagles defensive core that has greatly increased in size from last season.

Puck drop: 7pm at the South Surrey Arena.

After opening with a 5-0 win over Langley on home ice Friday night, the Eagles lost 8-3 in the return match up at Langley Sportsplex on Saturday evening. Langley Rivermen play by play broadcaster Brandon Astle has a full recap here: http://bit.ly/MV7EHF

On Sunday afternoon the Eagles paid a visit to the Coquitlam Express at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex. Connor Burke opened the scoring for Coquitlam in the first period, and the Express held the advantage at the intermission. Early in the middle frame, Demico Hannoun scored a shorthanded marker to even the score at 1-1, but the Express jumped out to a two goal lead with a pair of power play goals in the space of 6:38 scored by Cody Gordon and Sam Majka. Nicolas Pierog got one back for Surrey before the end of the period, and the Eagles went into the dressing room trailing 3-2. In the third, Coquitlam once again took a two goal lead on a power play goal by Brady Shaw, but the Birds mounted a valiant comeback with goals from Roshen Jaswal and Brett Mulcahy. The game ended in a 4-4 tie.

Eagles Blank Rivermen in Pre-Season Opener

Drew Best had two goals as the Surrey Eagles opened their pre-season campaign with a convincing 5-0 victory over the Langley Rivermen tonight at the South Surrey Arena.

The home team got on the board just 5:39 into the opening frame when Brandon Morley scored on the power play after Demico Hannoun threw the puck into the crease from behind the net. Less than four minutes later, Best would score his first goal of the hockey game when he threw the puck on net from the half-wall, beating Barrie between the wickets.

The Eagles held their two goal lead until 4:08 of the second period when Michael Stenerson got on the board with a goal on the man advantage. Best would add another power play goal before the end of the period, and Surrey had a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the third period. Trevor Cameron would add the fifth and final goal with just 1:11 to go in the hockey game when he powered his way past a defender on the left wing and scored top shelf.

Eagles goaltender Glenn Ferguson pitched the shutout, playing the full 60 minutes to pick up the win.

Surrey went 3-for-9 on the power play while Langley 0-for-5.

Schaefer on TEAM1040

Eagles Assistant Coach Peter Schaefer joined Jeff Paterson and Ben Kuzma this afternoon on TEAM1040 in Vancouver.

Here's the full interview:

Pre-Game Report: Eagles vs. Rivermen

Tonight the Surrey Eagles open their pre-season campaign against the Langley Rivermen. It's the first of a home-and-home with the Rivermen. The second game will be played tomorrow night at the Langley Sportsplex.

The two teams faced each other once in the 2011 pre-season, when the Eagles picked up a 2-1 win on home ice. Surrey also won the regular season series 5-2-0-1.

Eagles Players to Watch:

Craig Wyszomirski: The 20-year-old defenseman comes to the Eagles after spending last season in the NCAA at Providence College where he only played four games. The hulking blue-liner, who stands at 6'4 and is nearly 220 pounds, is expected to be a key piece for Surrey this season.

Brandon Morley: The younger of the two Morleys returns for his third BCHL season with the Eagles. With the departure of his older brother Tyler to the NCAA, Brandon is expected to take on an increased role both on and off the ice this season.

Drew Best: A native of Michigan, Best is going into his first season in the BCHL. The 18-year-old had a strong showing a training camp earlier in the week and will likely feature prominently in the Eagles offense this season.

I also had a chance to catch up with the newest Eagle, defenseman Brett Seldon, who was acquired from North York of the OJHL last week...

Training Camp: Day 1

Due to some commitments with my work at TEAM 1040, I was unable to attend the opening day of Eagles training camp. However, I did manage to catch up with Head Coach and GM Matt Erhart for his thoughts on the day.

The opening day of camp consisted of the three teams (red, blue and green) each practicing for an hour as well as doing some dry-land work.

"The first bit of practice we did a lot of puck movement stuff for guys to shake some nerves out and communicate with each other and start making some plays," said Erhart. "In the second half of practice we did more battle, competitive, one-on-one type drills as well as two-on-twos and drills down low where we tried to get the competitive spirit out of the players. On our big sheet of ice, guys who can skate and guys who want to compete are guys that usually have success."

In the first of the six intrasquad games, Team Blue picked up an 8-6 win over Team Green. There were a couple of players that caught Erhart's eye in particular.

"Drew Best came in from the Victory Honda program (in Plymouth, Michigan) and he was very dynamic offensively," said Erhart. "Craig Wyszomirski, who's a 20-year-old that came to us from the NCAA, showed that he's a big man out there. He's 6'4 and close to 220 pounds and can make plays, but obviously there were lots of guys who stood out on the first day."

Here's a list of the goal scorers from the first game:

Team Blue:                                     Team Green:
#14 Demico Hannoun (2)                #14 Alec Dawdyiak
#5 Robby Jang                                 #17 Chris Seto (3)
#17 Bryan Lubin                              #9 Colton Mackie
#26 Joel Gaudet (2)                          #16 Cam Seto
#23 Tanner Gattinger
#3 Craig Wyszomirski

Camp continues on Tuesday with three more games at the South Surrey Arena.

For Immediate Release: August 16, 2012

BCHL Season Opening Press Conference

Left to right: Garrison, Ringdal & Grisdale.
The BCHL held its season opening press conference at Rogers Arena in Vancouver this morning. Former Nanaimo Clipper and current Vancouver Canuck Jason Garrison was in attendance along with Chilliwack Chiefs President Glen Ringdal, BCHL Commissioner John Grisdale and BCHL Communications Director Brent Mutis.

The league made a couple of significant announcements ahead of the season which is now just 24 days away. Here's the full press release from the BCHL:

The British Columbia Hockey League announced Tuesday at a news conference at Rogers Arena that Save-On-Foods is the official presenting sponsor of the BCHL Showcase taking place Sept. 7 to 9 and hosted by the Chilliwack Chiefs.

Save-On-Foods has been a key supporter of the BCHL for the past five seasons and this announcement further illustrates their commitment to the league and its players.

“We’re excited to help the BCHL put on the Showcase and build the partnership we have with the league,” said Jim Bohac, store manager of the Save-On-Foods Sardis location. “It’s always a big plus to be involved with the Chiefs to support the team and the community.”

With 16 games being played in three days at Chilliwack’s Prospera Centre, there will be plenty of hockey action to take in. College and professional teams have taken note already and about 100 scouts are expected to attend.

"The BCHL continually strives to provide increased opportunities and exposure for its players and the Showcase is another initiative aimed at that,” said league commissioner John Grisdale. “By putting their name on the Showcase, Save-On-Foods helps ensure all our players get a chance to show what they can do in front of a lot of influential hockey people.”

Also at Tuesday's event, the league announced Nanaimo Clippers alumnus and Vancouver Canucks defenceman Jason Garrison will serve as the honourary chairperson for the inaugural event. Garrison won a Fred Page Cup title in 2004 with Nanaimo.

The first game of the Save-On-Foods BCHL Showcase is slated for Friday, Sept. 7 at 3:30 p.m. as the Langley Rivermen take on the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. There are six games on the agenda the each of the Saturday and Sunday dates.

Below is the full audio from the press conference along with individual scrums with Garrison and Grisdale.

Schaefer Eager To Help Eagles Soar

Assistant Coach: it’s a role that former Vancouver Canuck Peter Schaefer didn’t ever see himself filling while he was still playing the game. Nonetheless here he is, stepping behind the bench for the first time with the Surrey Eagles.

However, the 35-year-old doesn’t see his new position as that of a typical coach. He hopes to be more of a mentor, someone his players can turn to for advice about the game in any capacity.

“I’m going to have a bit of a personality,” said Schaefer. “I’m here to try and make the players comfortable. With the experience I had playing in a number of different leagues, I hope that if they have any questions or if they want to learn about anything on or off the ice that I can help them out.”

Schaefer spent his junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL where he went to two Memorial Cup tournaments and scored 124 goals and 291 points over parts of four seasons. He was drafted 66th overall in the third round of the 1995 draft by the Canucks and went on to play 635 games in the NHL, split between Vancouver, Ottawa and Boston. He also spent time playing in Finland, Italy, and most recently Germany where he finished his career at the end of the 2010-2011 season.

“I’ve always loved the game and when it’s all you’ve ever done, it’s definitely tough,” he said of his decision to retire at the age of 33. “At the same time, as you move up and move forward in your career, you realize that it’s a business. I got a lot from the game and I’m very fortunate.”

Eagles Head Coach and General Manager Matt Erhart hopes that Schaefer’s vast playing experience and wealth of hockey knowledge will benefit the team -- especially offensively.

“He was a talented offensive player, and he’s going to be really good for us in terms of teaching the little things and nuances to the forwards,” said Erhart of Schaefer. “He brings a name for instant respect and credibility for the players. They all know who he is.”

Schaefer’s goal is to help his players reach the heights he achieved, but he also understands the importance of an NCAA scholarship -- something he wasn’t eligible for because he chose to play in the WHL. At the time, the native of Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan felt that playing in the SJHL meant giving up on his NHL dream. He now concedes that the quality of Junior A hockey has vastly improved over the last two decades.

“Now there are just as many guys coming out of Junior A as there are coming out of the western league, and college is a great program,” he said. “A lot of guys, when they’re done in the NHL, no matter how much money they have saved up, they don’t know what to do with themselves, so I think whether you make it or not, (college hockey) is a good route to go.”

By joining an Eagles program that helped 13 players receive university scholarships last season alone, Schaefer hopes to make a significant impact on the careers and lives of the young players he coaches in Surrey.
